  • The Return of Ice Cube

There was a time when I actually respected and liked the stuff that Ice Cube was doing. His music was dope, his film career actually looked like it might be going somewhere, and then he started to disappoint. After 3Kings, he really started to lose it. 3Kings was actually a decent films, and then he followed it up with trash like Are We There Yet? and The Friday after Next. If he needed the money, I would be able to understand the justification, but he does not. And as his film career started to cater for little kids, his music seemed to lose its way too. However, it seems like he is back and though i do not feel that he quite reaches his former heights, it is kinda good to see a veteran MC come out and share his thoughts and experiences without being too preachy.

So he is the Video for his new single and good luck to you Mr Cube.

And I do hope that this means that you will stop making really shit films like First Sunday and Torque and use your clout to make decent films that do not highlight all the black stereotypes, like we need any help in that area.

  • Trying to Drive in Brazil

Finally i got my act together and decided to get the whole driving thing rolling. Here in the land of infinite bureaucracy, it is a three pronged process, filled with twists and turns that would send a bobslayer into a fit.

Part 1. - The pysch evaluation

I had asked the people who helped me set this up about this part of the test since it was the part that freaked me out the most. My appointment was at ten am and I arrived promptly and sat down. I was eventually called up at about 10:15, which is fine with me as I was feeling pretty agitated when i arrived. They asked for my details, which i gave them - my passport, my brazilian id. Then they asked me for my parents names. Heh? I asked what for... I mean my parents do not even live here but apparently it is normal. So already i had problems. I told them my parents live in London and Freetown, they said they need it cos that is what Detran (Dept of Transport) says that they need. I guess i shall have to fax it over. They then told me to sit down and i got a chance to catch up on my reading. Am currently reading a very insightful book, in Portuguese, called 1808, all about the move of the Portuguese monarchy to Brazil cos they were far too pussy to stay and fight Napoleon's entire army (ironic tone in my head).

After reading just over a page, I was called into the doctors office, yes you read that right, the DOCTOR'S OFFICE, where he ask me about my general health, took my blood pressure, gave me an eye test, ask about my family history, checked my colour blindness levels and then told me that i was ok and could leave. I then returned to the main waiting room and waited. The next phase of the test took place after another 15 minutes or so. I was taken to a small room, akin to a detain cell in Guantanamo bay and questions more deeply about my existence. The lady asked me where i was from, how much education i had, if i had a job, if i had any siblings, any long term illnesses, where my parents live, what i am doing in brazil, how long am i staying, am i married, what did i study at school, what hand i write with and i am sure there were a few more cos it felt as if i was there for a very long time indeed.

Following that lovely Q&A session, I then one minute to pick all appearances of 4 roads signs that appeared on an A4 piece of paper filled with road signs. Yeah, silly, i know but it had to be done. Then, just as my body was slowly coming to the realisation that i had not fed it the whole morning and was starting to protest this daft decision with a very bad headache, i was told that i had four minutes for my next exercise. This time, on the page, there were 50 signs with speed limits on them from 1 - 50, all nicely jumbled up, and in that 4 minute period, i had to find and cross off all 50 in order. Not too bad I thought, but by the time i got to 20, my headache had reached level 6 in pain, my eyes were blurry and i seemed to have forgotten how to count to 50. i think i may have made it to 40. i hope i did enough. just when i was starting to get frustrated, the fun really started.

Next in line for my now cranky, and over worked cranium was the let's draw lines test. there were about 6 or 7 different sheets of paper, and my task was to draw circles, or lines, or zigs-zags and then zag-zigs, i would start off being able to look and then the lady would cover my eyes and i would have to continue blind. WTF. really. all i want is a driving lesson. For this amount of stress they really should be giving me a free entry into Wharton Business School. So that took a while. Stomach rumbling, head hurting, body dehydrating, The Nasa astronaut test would be a walk in the park compared to this. We finished my last art project, the whole thing reminding me of art class when i was 12 or so, it brought back all those horrible repressed memories of stick men, and crappy landscapes, and constantly being told that i could not even hold the brush right... ok maybe not that bad, but the warden, and i use the word warden here deliberately, kept on readjusting my hand position and the angle of my pencil, as if the angle would straighten my increasingly wonky lines. The particular posture i had to adopt quickly tired me out and i started to think that maybe this was the point. maybe it was not the actual test that they were looking at, but the behavior to the test. So I endeavoured to keep cool and move on to the next part. And yes, there was a next part.

The final part was a logic test - i hate logic... tests. They always make me feel so freaking stupid. box, circle box, circle... what comes next? Come on... i know that, but it gets harder and harder and my poor malnourished brain cannot take it any more and just wants to implode and call it a day. and my stomach is screaming at me to get home and feed it, my mouth is dry, my eyes are watering... and in my mind i am thinking that a night in a Japanese torture chamber would be a better way to spend my time. and then, it is over... and about bloody time too. Really, the only thing missing was a rectal exam.

    results.... not until tomorrow.

and guess what. that is probably the easiest, or at least the shortest part of the test since after this, as long as i am not seen as totally dysfunctional, the next part will be a week long of four hour classes where they apparently show videos of car crashes and lovely stuff like that, followed by a written test. all in Portuguese. i guess i should have done my test in England after all. Our car is apparently off the coast of Brazil, and hopefully it will be here very soon. When i say soon, i mean weeks and not days.

To leave on a more positive note, i thought that i would share a lovely song with you.

  • Rhymefest - Something a little different

Even though I have no time for a lot of hip hop music these days, I can't help but love hip hop music. My general playlist revolves around artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Wu Tang, Notorious BIG. You know, what we almost 30 somethings like to call the golden age of hip hop. Yet i still listen to the new stuff, though most of it does not resonate with me, i am still on the look out for good music, as good music stands out. Right now, one of my favourite artists is Little Brother, two MCs from Durham, NC. The reason they stand out is due to the lack of bling, lack of beef, it is just hip hop in its purest; the usual rhymes boasting about lyrical dexterity and social commentary. With a little comedy thrown in for good measure.

I came across a track today from an artist called Rhymefest. He's been around since the early 90's i believe, and did some stuff with A Tribe Called Quest. His new(ish) song is called Stolen and talks about stuff that Rappers rarely mention in their music, namely genocide. I am not sure that I even like the song, but it is good to see people taking a note of what is going on in the world and reflecting that in their music.

I love my party music, and only just the other day I was telling Laurie of one of my guilty pleasures. I miss hip hop. I miss seeing all those ludicrous videos with the blind and the girls and the mansions and the yachts and the cars and the excess. But not because I like the videos, but because behind the ostentatious features, there are actually some decent songs and more than that, there are songs that really make you want to dance.

I found this one and it made me smile as it took me back to the days of the sega megadrive and Sonic the Hedgehog

And sometimes it is good to be reminded of simpler days.

I am not sure if any one of my faithful readership (I know there are at least three of you out there) have ever watch a TV show called "the Boondocks", if you have not, then you should. Mainly because of this

    Boondocks - Hunger Strike (Banned) | Videos > HipHopDX.com

But also because it is a great satiric show on black america and its surrounding culture. There have been fantastic episodes on R Kelly, National Security, beef between rappers (which featured a great cameo by Mos Def, and horrible state of BET, as featured in the above link. Even if you are not interested in the satire, it is still just a very funny show and one that really deserves a better following.

And with that I shall leave you with some classic tracks for reminiscing purposes

Pete Rock and CL Smooth - TROY (one of my favourite songs ever)

  • RIP Bernie Mac and Issac Hasyes. Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson too?

It has been quite a tough week for famous black people, well famous black men to be exact. We have had to wave goodbye to a legend musician and a damn funny comedian. I was a latecomer to the Bernie Mac scene and outside of Chef and Shaft, I do not know that much about the music of Issac Hayes, yeah i probably should not admit that, but there you are. Only a couple of days before there was a report that Morgan Freeman had been involved in a car crash. Wow. Now, I am no conspiracy theorist, but surely it seems that some kind of conspiracy is going on? Now, this was only a quick thought in my head. Until I saw this:

    Eerie is it not?

And how is it that Jean Alain Boumsong is now playing for Lyon, when we all know what a crap player he is? How has he managed to play for Juventus (even though they were in the second division) and now Lyon. Newcastle and Rangers I can understand. Sometimes football is really inexplicable.

  • Snoop has left the building

You generally know when an artist has "made it" when they start having identity issues. Sometimes with drastically dire consequences, sometimes with interesting ones. Well we now know that Snoop is currently in this state. His last three songs have been as different as I could have ever imagined. And while I liked the kitschy look of Sensual Seduction, with its 80s synthesizer vibe

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKz-RXSeIYA

I was not so sure about his country ode to Marijuana with Willie Nelson

    http://videos.onsmash.com/v/iEbvY2Y2Kj8EmZvJ

And just when you think that he may be going through a midlife crisis, he drops his new song which takes him all the way to India.

    Snoop does Mumbai

    http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/videos/id.1278/title.akshay-kumar-f-snoop-dogg-singh-is-kinng

The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the guy is having some fun, and fair play to him. Too many rappers spend far too much time being gangster and not really stretching themselves musically. No you do not have to go as far left as SNOOP, but it would be nice if they experimented just a little, and stepped out of their comfort zone to see what they can find.

So thanks to Snoop, and OutKast and even NERD (who I do not like that much, but they try) for experimenting a little and for making an otherwise staid industry, a little more interesting and a little more full of hope.

  • Nearly a month in

and once again they are drilling holes outside my apartment. There does not seem to be any routine involved. No way to plan whether or not I will be here when it starts. I am trying to watch to only part of the Olympics I am interested in, but the sound has been drowned out by some geezer with a pneumatic drill outside my window. This does not happen every day, just on the days when I actually feel like getting stuff done.

Now that I have decided to stop feeling sorry for myself, and have some kind of motivation with regards to finding a job, I am feeling distinctively happier. IT might also have something to do with the fact that season 5 of West Wing has started to arrive from Netflix and that Ivory Coast are playing against an supremely talented front triangle of Messi, Aguero and Riquilme. For all the strength and skill that the Ivorians have, they get ripped apart whenever the Argies decide that they feel like attacking. I caught the end of the Brazil/Belgium game this morning and that was a let down. Dunga has turned Brazil into a star studded less geriatic version of Bolton under Sam Allardyce, not sure if much has changed under Megson. Admittedly the Belgians committed 30 fouls, has two players sent off, but that had more to do with the anal tendencies of the Saudi referee, AL GHAMDI Khalil, who sent Kompany off cos Diego slipped under him. The second decision was even worse. We all know that Brazilians have been guilty of play acting but this was ridiculous. It has not been this bad since Rivaldo got hit in the chest, or was it side, and was filmed clutching his face and managed to get a Turkish player sent off.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVTw1ysCgBY

    Yeah you all remember that!!

Have just found out that the Dutch are playing Nigeria at the same the Argentina are playing Ivory Coast. I only have one TV. Why do you expect me to choose? Does anyone actually have a TV that has Picture in Picture mode that actually works?

Anyway, the real reason I decided to write this morning is because I heard about the Bond theme song to be done by Alicia Keys and Jack White? Who is that? The bond songs recently, even during the last days of camp bond with Pierce Brosnan, have been crap. I am surprised that they have not done a reality TV show for the next Bond song. I came across a rather fun take on the Bond theme song, mainly dealing with the curious title "Quantum of Solace" which I am still trying to decipher. So i thought I would share it with people as it made me chuckle, and it should have that effect for any Bond fan, or anyone who like anything done by the people who brought you Spaced.

    here it is:
